landscape architecture jobs
Landscape architecture jobs involve expertise around the planning, design and sometimes oversight of an exterior landscape or space in cities, towns and the countryside. Public parks, corporate office buildings, housing estates and large wilderness areas are all typical of the projects that landscape architecture work can cover.
Landscape architecture jobs in the UK and abroad
Landscape architecture is a chartered profession - the increased emphasis on sustainability, liveability and environmental conservation means that landscape architecture jobs are increasingly in demand at home and abroad.
Landscape architects need to have a concern for the environment, an understanding of conservation, an appreciation of design, good communication skills and a practical but creative outlook. Around 50 per cent work in private practices - others are employed by local authorities or government agencies. Very often professionals make their biggest contribution to the project in the early stages when they can add fresh ideas to what is effectively a blank canvas.
Qualifications needed for landscape architecture jobs
The Landscape Institute is the recognised body for those in landscape architecture jobs in England. It takes around seven years to qualify as a recognised landscape architect; an honours degree in Landscape Architecture or similar is required followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture, covering the subject in far greater detail (mass urban planning, construction and planting).
The trainee must then complete a minimum of two years in a registered Landscape Practice while taking chartership. You are then awarded the full Landscape Architect title and become a Member of the Landscape Institute (MLI.)
