A clerk of works can be hired by anybody (contractor, sub contractor, client side company, consultancy or architect) and their primary job function is to oversee the quality of workmanship going ahead on site and ensure that the project is meeting the client’s requirements, quality expectations and schedule.
Usually these are prepared by an architect or engineer engaged by the client. A clerk of works is expected to retain an impartial view throughout the progression of a project.
A Clerk of works can have a construction background and be a member of the Institute of the Clerk of Works (ICW), the only market recognised professional body. Building surveyors can often have the skills required to be a clerk of works.

Because of the nature of the work, a clerk of works is often a part-time post. You are not required to be on site all the time unless it is a very large project you are involved in.
Clerk of works jobs will usually require you to be able to write well to complete reports and it will also be important that you are aware of the latest developments and the likely developments in building regulation. Additionally, a methodical and accurate approach to recording project critical information is core to this career.
