The scope of GIS jobs is challenging and varied. Requirement capture and system design, the development and testing of enterprise database and GIS systems are some of the daily activities.

GIS jobs span the engineering disciplines

You could be undertaking GIS mapping, populating data structures and recording metadata information or cataloguing and recording data. Dealing with data requests and data exporting, assisting in site and ecology survey work are other facets of GIS analyst jobs.

Operations include highways, rail, property, housing, gas, water, and management consultancy in a wide range of disciplines. You could be aiding business development by conducting technical demonstrations and write bids in order to win new business.

Design is an important element as you could be producing various drawings, notably site location plans, phase 1 habitat plans, environmental and ecological constraints plans and archaeological resources maps.

Keep abreast of latest design packages

Relevant qualifications include a degree in Computer Science or GIS-related and/or data management experience. Knowledge of design packages such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS 9 and CorelDraw is a plus. Effective communication in both written and spoken English are a must and you must be at ease providing technical demonstrations to clients.
