IFA Jobs

Whereas a financial advisor will offer either a ‘tied’ or ‘multi-tied’ approach – either for a single or range of companies – indpendent financial advisers (IFAs) can pick from the gamut of products in the market to suit their client’s requirements.

Excellent people skills for IFA jobs

This is what sets those working in IFA jobs apart – research needs to cover numerous products across many different companies so that you can give the best possible advice to your clients.

To succeed in IFA jobs, you need first-class interpersonal skills and communicate clearly but you will also need to be actively involved building your client base, which can be achieved through a mix of cold calling, referrals, marketing and networking.

Working hours can be varied as you will have to work around clients’ commitments – be prepared to work evenings and weekends. You would typically be based in an office (for an IFA company) or you could work from home.

IFA jobs – the qualifications needed

It is imperative that you study towards a qualification that is recognised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA). IFA jobs require a thorough knowledge of the regulatory framework, investment products, how to give advice to clients and importantly the risk elements involved.

These include the Certificate of Financial Planning offered by the Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) and the Certificate for Financial Advisers (CeFA) from the ifs School of Finance.

The CII also provides more advanced Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning are also available (and become a Chartered Financial Planner after five years’ experience).
