The DHS is a Government initiative that has dictated that by the year 2010 all social housing should reach a minimum standard of repair, comfort and accommodation. Condition surveys are also also performed on commercial properties; however, this is just one of the duties of building surveyor jobs.

Most large consultancies will have their own pool of stock condition surveys, which they will use on a contract basis. This is to ensure that they are able to cope with varying workloads.
