cost commercial jobs

The commercial, quality surveying and cost of engineering function within an organisation are obviously crucial in any sector, whether it be construction, civil engineering, manufacturing or maintenance.

However, one could argue that these roles are even more pivotal within the energy sector (which Hays Energy defines as Oil & Gas, Utilities, Power Generation, Power Distribution, Renewables and Petrochemical) due to large values attached to these types of project.

The commercial departments within operating companies, consultancies and contractors are crucial to ensuring schemes are delivered on time and to budget. Key skills required in the commercial sector are a keen eye and attention to detail, an analytical approach and good communication skills.

Jobs in commercial cost control in the UK

Individuals must balance the needs of their organisation to keep close control of potentially spiralling costs throughout the lifecycle of a project and the necessity to adapt to changing conditions to allow operational staff to deliver robust and effective projects.  Effective liaison and negotiation with numerous different partners, often with potentially conflicting vested interests is often key to the successful delivery of a project.

Previous experience in the civils, mechanical and electrical and engineering sectors is priority as is an exceptional understanding and application of relative forms such as NEC, I CHEM E and ICE.

Chartered status is becoming more and more relevant in the energy sector within a consultancy environment but increasingly with operators and contractors as well. Commercial staff are effectively the accountant and the lawyer within their organisation and must combine the analytical and persuasive skills of each role to be successful
